Fallout

“You won’t even recognise that place. For miles you won’t see one full grown tree. Not even a shrub grows there. The rivulets have dried and birds have vanished.”

Grandpa was adamant that he would go back to the place where he had spent ten years of his childhood.

“I haven’t many days left. Please, I want to feel those trees and hear those birds….”

“It’s all changed, fallout of the progress.”

“You think I’m a fool.”

“If you insist I will take you, but you may not survive the shock.”

“Let it be.”

We are on the way.

  1. To see a place changed thus must be devastating.. But still maybe it's better to face reality.

  3. At least it isn't a shopping mall with a 50 acre parking lot.

  4. I too would want to always visit my hometown not matter the progress there, how would anybody else understand my feelings.

  5. Great story. Places never stay the same, but destroying forests for such a desolate place is especially painful. Poor grandpa. My parents once visited the place they called home after many years, and they wished they hadn't. Memories make places larger than life, and reality bites.

  7. I can understand his desire to revisit a significant place from his youth, as his life draws to an end. Perhaps he can cope with the changes. Well told. You capture the nostalgia of the old, and the tragedy of 'progress'.

  9. Sometimes it's best just to revisit memories. That way you see it as you remember it and don't have the disappointment of seeing what it's become.
